“We have entered into an agreement with the State of Kansas to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season."
“Today we are excited to take another momentous step for the future of the franchise,” team owner Clark Hunt wrote in the letter. “We have entered into an agreement with the State of Kansas to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season. In the years ahead, we look forward to designing and building a state-of-the-art domed stadium and mixed-use district in Wyandotte County, and a best-in-class training facility, team headquarters, and mixed-use district in Olathe, totaling a minimum of $4 billion of development in the State of Kansas.” Wyandotte County is home to Kansas City, Kansas.
The move from the Chiefs was secured after lawmakers in Kansas approved a proposal to fund the new stadium, which will be set to go in 2031. The agreement approved by the state lawmakers will include a training facility as well as a team headquarters. STAR bonds, a financial tool primarily used in Kansas associated with the financing of large entertainment or tourism ventures, will be used to cover up to 70 percent of the costs, per the New York Post.
“This is a great day for Kansas City Chiefs fans,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “This public-private partnership, the result of a thoughtful and deliberate process, will build upon the Hunts’ generational legacy by boldly investing in one of America’s greatest fan bases. The Chiefs’ new enclosed stadium will be a stage for unforgettable moments, whether it’s playoff games, concerts or championship events. We congratulate the Chiefs and the Kansas City community on this important achievement.”
Since 1972, the Chiefs have been playing at Arrowhead Stadium and in recent years have become one of the most competitive teams in the NFL. Of the four Super Bowl wins from the Chiefs, three of them have come within the last five championships, including 2020, 2023, and 2024.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly posted to X, “This is a game-changer for Kansas. Our agreement with the Chiefs delivers a $3B stadium in Wyandotte County, a new HQ in Olathe, 20,000+ construction jobs, a $4.4B economic impact, and $1.06B annually once open — all with no new taxes or state budget dollars.
