Stewart previously described Twilight as "such a gay movie."
When asked about previous comments that she would be open to a Twilight reboot, Stewart said she had been "mostly joking," but said a continuation would interest her more than a rehashing of the original story. Shawkat then suggested how such a continuation could begin. “Bella would come back and be like ‘I’m gay’,” Shawkat said, prompting Stewart to laugh. Shawkat described the idea as “hot, modern, fresh,” and the two then said that Stewart's wife, screenwriter and director Dylan Meyer, should write the project, reports Pink News.
Stewart continued the joke by imagining a more aggressive return for Bella, saying, “I’m gonna f*ck your whole family.” She then added, “God, it feels good.” Stewart has previously discussed Twilight through a queer lens. In a 2024 interview with Variety, she described the franchise as “such a gay movie,” pointing to its themes of hidden desire and “wanting what’s going to destroy you,” which she said gave it “a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love”.
Stewart married Meyer earlier this year. The two recently worked together on The Wrong Girls, Meyer's directorial debut, which stars Stewart. Shawkat also praised Meyer’s work on the film, calling her “such a great leader, so calm and grounded and appreciative of everybody’s time and clear about what she wanted”.
The original Twilight film series, based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer, starred Stewart as Bella opposite Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The five films were released between 2008 and 2012, becoming an international sensation.
