The series is set to "rehash history through the Larry David lens." When asked about the UFC fight that was staged on White House grounds, David said "It was a travesty. What else can you say about it? It was embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be an American." Drug-addled former first son Hunter Biden also found the display embarrassing.
The show is billed as a satire and will air on HBO. Other Hollywood notables who will appear in the show include Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bill Hader, Kathryn Hahn, Jon Hamm, Henry Winkler, Sean Hayes, Joe Manganiello, Jane Krakowski, Greg Kinnear, Alan Tudyk, Rita Wilson, Jerry and David Seinfeld.
Vince Vaughan, Jeff Garlin, JB Smoove and Susie Essman will also play roles in the series, along with a cameo performance from Barack Obama himself. David praised the former president's acting chops, saying that he had "perfect" timing and "was really good at ad-libbing."
While David loved working alongside Obama, revealing that it was his production company Higher Ground that reached out to David about the project, he's never been a fan of President Donald Trump. In response to Bill Maher's having dinner with the president, David wrote a satirical piece for The New York Times likening that dinner to a dinner with Adolf Hitler in 1939. Trump has not committed genocide nor waged a war against the entire world. Maher later pointed out that David and he are not friends.
"You can't go a day without thinking about what he's done to this country," David told David Wallace in 2024, "because he's such a little baby that he's thrown 250 years of democracy out the window by not accepting the results of an election. I mean it's so crazy. He's such a sociopath. He's so insane. He just couldn't admit to losing. And we know he lost, he knows he lost. And look how he's fooled everybody. He's convinced all these people he didn't lose. He's such a sick man. He's so sick."
The UFC fight occurred on June 14 as part of the Freedom 250 celebrations to honor the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. Plenty of other events have also been scheduled including the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC, with exhibits from all 50 states. Bill Maher is set to receive the Mark Twain Award at the Kennedy Center on June 28.
