A Las Vegas police officer is now paralyzed as a result of a protestor, allegedly 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego, shooting him in the head during the recent demonstrations over the death of George Floyd.

According to the Associated Press, Officer Shay Mikalonis was reported to have been paralyzed from the next down and continues to rely on a ventilator after he was shot on June 1.

Protestors and rioters have taken to the streets across the nation amid the death of Floyd, which has resulted in acts of arson, assault, burglary, vandalism, and even death.

Mikalonis' family shared with the Las Vegas Police Department that he is still on a ventilator and unable to speak. He does not recognize any of his family members and has recently been accepted into a spinal rehabilitation facility.
