The LGBTQ outlet PinkNews has expressed disappointment that actor Hugh Laurie, best known for his leading role on the TV show House, has stated his support for protecting women’s sports from biological male competitors and for WNBA star Sophie Cunningham.

Laurie wrote in a post earlier in August, responding to a since-deleted post from comedian Graham Linehan, “no, I don’t believe men should compete against women.  I thought I’d made that pretty clear.”

Laurie added in another post, “yes, I support Sophie Cunningham.” Cunningham has made headlines in recent weeks over her support of protecting women’s sports.

PinkNews, however, said fans were “disappointed” in Laurie’s comments. A graphic posted by the outlet’s social media account stated, “Hugh Laurie disappoints fans with support for Sophie Cunningham amid trans sports row.”

Replies to PinkNews’ post overwhelmingly supported Laurie’s position. One user wrote, “not this fan.”

Another wrote, “this made me love him even more.”

“I’d be willing to bet 90% of his fans agree. You all are the absurd outliers,” another wrote.

In a July interview with ESPN, Cunningham said, “I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men.” Cunningham has received support for her comments, with fans attending games and rallies holding signs thanking her for speaking out. At a Seattle Storm game in late July, a co-owner was suspended after berating two teen girls who had attended, holding up a sign that read, "Thank you, Sophie, for speaking up for girls!"
