“We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing."
The comments, which have gone viral on social media, follow other radical left-wing remarks from Weaver that have shown the 37-year-old to be quite fond of confiscating property.
“We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing,” Weaver said in a clip that has been unearthed and gone viral on X.
“A lot of times people ask ‘Why are we fighting for rent control when we have NYCHA? We should be fighting to save public housing’,” Weaver added. “We decided that through a program like rent control, we are able to directly challenge the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market.”
The comments were made by Weaver during a virtual North Brooklyn DSA meeting from 2022, according to the clip posted on YouTube.
She went on, saying that pushing rent control could “strike a blow to the entire real estate industry at once” by preventing it from being a tool to build wealth. “The idea is that we could weaken the entire industry at once through a strong rent control campaign, and that would strengthen our ability to do things like fight for social housing,” she said in her comments.
This comes after other comments from Weaver have been exposed, including her plan to seize property from landlords, in particular those who are white. She has also claimed that homeownership is a characteristic of "white supremacy" in the past.
