McCarthy says Biden’s DOJ trying to imprison chief political rival while giving his son a ‘sweetheart deal’ is symbolic of America’s ‘two-tier system’

The ‘deal’ McCarthy is referring to involves Hunter Biden pleading guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of neglecting to pay taxes.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) put the Biden administration on blast Tuesday, telling reporters that recent legal actions out of the US Department of Justice have continued to highlight “the two-tier system in America.”

He told reporters, “If you are the president's leading political opponent, the DOJ tries to literally put you in jail and give you prison time. If you are the president's son, you get a sweetheart deal.”

The deal McCarthy is referring to involves Hunter Biden pleading guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of neglecting to pay taxes, while entering into a diversion on a federal gun charge.

Hunter Biden's attorney Chris Clark reacted to the plea, commenting, "With the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter has been resolved."

McCarthy noted that such legal rulings continue “to show the two-tier system in America.”

Some have accused the Biden DOJ of violating the Ashcroft Memo, which states that it is an agency policy that “in all federal criminal cases, federal prosecutors must charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense or offenses that are supported by the facts of the case, except in limited circumstances authorized by the Assistant Attorney General, United States Attorney, or designated supervisory attorney.”

Hunter Biden was charged by the Justice Department for owning a revolver after he had lied about not being addicted to drugs on a background check form in order to purchase the firearm. He later publicly admitted to “smoking crack every 15 minutes” during that same year.

US Delaware Attorney David Weiss has recommended Hunter Biden be given probation for his tax misdemeanors; a far cry from the 10 years Hunter could be locked up if he were to be charged and convicted over his alleged gun crimes.

Upon reacting to the news of Hunter Biden's relatively minor punishment, conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson laid into the Washington political establishment, saying on his Tuesday episode of Tucker on Twitter, “Biden pled to two misdemeanor tax evasion charges then entered a diversion on a federal gun charge. That's it. As far as Merrick Garland’s Justice Department is concerned, Hunter Biden is done. There was no pre-dawn raid carried live simultaneously on CNN. There was no perp walk, no handcuffs, no press conference. Above all, there was no felony. Hunter Biden, who broke federal gun laws, can still carry a gun. It's like it all never happened.”

He then joked that the DOJ has now “baptized Hunter Biden, a lifetime of sins washed away in an instant,” before remarking that it is a “secular miracle.”
