These layoffs will impact 5 percent of Meta’s staff, or roughly 3,600 individuals who are low performers.
According to The Information, which obtained an internal memo from Meta sent out to workers on Friday about layoffs happening next week, Meta said workers who are getting laid off will be removed from the company’s systems within an hour of the notification and will later be informed about their severance packages.
Last month, Meta told employees that the company was planning for layoffs on Feb. 10. The outlet reported that these layoffs will impact 5 percent of Meta’s staff, or roughly 3,600 individuals that would be identified as low performers at the tech giant.
This move follows a trend in the tech industry, where major companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce are also planning or have already begun job cuts in 2025. This shift coincides with a growing focus on spending for artificial intelligence technology across the sector, including at Meta.
In addition to this, it coincides with cuts to programs related to DEI across the tech industry as well as other corporations. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also gotten more friendly with the incoming administration of President Doanld Trump. Last month, Meta said it would be abandoning DEI programs and making changes to its "hiring, development and procurement practices."
Last month, Zuckerberg announced that the platform would be shifting to a new “fact-checking” system, similar to Community Notes on X and would be more open to discourse on the platform, and work with the White House to fight for free speech in other countries aside from the US.
