A Mexican national has died after being hit by a semi-truck on Tuesday while running from federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation in St. Augustine, Florida, the NYP reported.

The 28-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been revealed, fled federal authorities on foot after being stopped at a gas station/convenience store just before 7 am. He reportedly darted across State Road 16, a busy highway, and was struck by a tractor-trailer, according to Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), were conducting a targeted immigration enforcement operation when the four subjects fled on foot, authorities said. The three surviving subjects did not sprint across the highway. Their nationalities and immigration statuses have not yet been revealed.

Sgt. Bryan said the semi-truck driver stopped and attempted to help the foreign national that he fatally struck, according to the paper. DHS identified the man who was gruesomely killed only as a "Mexican national." The agency said the FHP and HSI are leading the death investigation.

This comes after the recent fatal ICE-involved shootings in Biddeford, Maine, and Houston, Texas, prompting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday to order a temporary shift in policy relating to vehicle stops at the direction of DHS Sec. Markwayne Mullin.

President Donald Trump overturned that order on Wednesday following extensive backlash on X, formerly Twitter. The White House said the president was not notified about the decision. ICE uses traffic stops for the majority of its targeted arrests.
