Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said that she did not say she would "close borders" during a phone call with President-elect Donald Trump, despite his having said that "She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border."

"In our conversation with President Trump," Sheinbaum posted on X, per translation, "I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico's position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples."

Trump had posted about the phone call as well, saying "Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, US consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!"

"Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!" Trump continued.

"I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump," Sheinbaum said further, "We discussed Mexico's strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico. We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl."

Trump has threatened both Mexico and Canada, America's continental neighbors, with 25 percent tariffs on goods from those countries should they fail to take action on preventing illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US.
