Michigan father shot wife, 6 children before setting house ablaze, fatally shooting himself: police

A chilling 911 dispatch audio has revealed the horrifying moments first responders arrived at the Michigan home where a father is accused of murdering his wife and six children before setting multiple fires throughout the property and taking his own life.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple's six children, ranging in age from 5 to 15, were found dead inside their Grand Haven Township home on Friday. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office announced this week that autopsies determined all eight family members died from gunshot wounds. Investigators say Kristopher Karolkiewicz fatally shot his wife and children before turning the handgun on himself in what authorities have classified as a murder-suicide. Dispatch audio from Fox News captured the moment emergency crews realized the scale of the unfolding horror.

"White smoke coming out of the window, house is full of smoke seen from the outside and smells electrical," a dispatcher can be heard saying as firefighters responded to the scene. Authorities say multiple fires had been intentionally set throughout the home following the killings in what investigators believe was an apparent attempt to destroy evidence. Several family pets, including multiple dogs and at least one cat, also died from smoke inhalation.

Capt. Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said investigators found the victims in numerous bedrooms throughout the home. A handgun recovered at the scene is believed to have been used in all eight deaths. The killings have shocked the local community, particularly after reports emerged that Amanda Karolkiewicz had allegedly written anonymous Reddit posts describing marital problems and accusing her husband of having an affair with a younger intern. According to the Holland Sentinel, posts linked to an account believed to belong to Amanda described how she first met Kristopher while working as an intern.

"He was divorced and older than me... fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern," one 2024 post reportedly read. In another post, she allegedly wrote that she remained committed to repairing the marriage because of their children. "I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now," the post reportedly stated.

"I do want to make it clear that we have no way to confirm that that was Mandy that made the posts," family spokesperson Emily Jones said. Amanda had recently returned from a trip to China with the couple's two adopted 11-year-old daughters just days before the killings, according to reports. Kristopher Karolkiewicz had previously served as vice president of sales and marketing at the American Heart Association before his employment ended earlier this month. Amanda was working as a substitute teacher in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district after previously working in banking and insurance.

"Our daughter Mandy was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students," her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, said in a statement. "We pray for God's peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives."
