Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she's "glad" Big 10 football has been cancelled, according to MLive. This in a state known for its college football fandom.
Football mavens at OutKick call her "The Great Villainess of Big Ten fans everywhere," along with her "partner in villain crime, commissioner Kevin Warren."
Whitmer herself said the following in an interview on Monday:
"I was glad that the Big Ten took the leadership role that they did."
"Obviously they've got huge universities and they've got people who are on all of these campuses that are working to try to address the COVID pandemic that we’re all struggling with."
"Football is a very intimate sport where you are up in one another's faces."
"That’s what makes it inherently risky, so that's my concern. I love football. I wanted to be a sports broadcaster. I don't like not seeing football this fall, but I'm glad that the Big Ten took the leadership they did and the (Michigan) High School Sports Association did as well."
The NFL has decided to move on with its own fall season, albeit with many new restrictions. The Big Ten, however, decided to take a different tack and just not have a fall season, which has drawn criticism from far and wide for this decision taken by commissioner Kevin Warren.
People are asking why the Big Ten can't have some sort of a season, considering that not only the NFL but also the SEC, Big 12 and ACC will be going forward in some way in the fall.
A letter was sent to Warren, signed mostly by players and their families, asking him to reverse the cancellation decision. Also, there has been a petition that managed to garner over 300,000 signatures in just one week, asking for the 2020 season to be reinstated.
