The announcement was made by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Thursday that gyms and organized sports are allowed to function again, lifting some of the longest running quarantine-type restrictions in the country, according to Wood TV.

Whitmer mentioned that she hoped that the State Department of Health's guidelines will be closely met, and that authorities will be doing their due diligence to ensure that that's the case.

Gyms have been allowed in a very limited fashion in some of the northern counties of Michigan, which are much less densely populated, since June. The state-wide order will go into effect six days from this writing, on Wednesday Sept. 9, 2020.

Bowling alleys, roller rinks and ice rinks will also be open but the general public will not be admitted. The venues will only be able to be used for organized sporting events.

The Whitmer administration also released a recommendation to all Michigan residents, recommending that they abstain from combat sports and other contact sports like hockey, football, soccer, and basketball.

It's not yet clear whether this new decision will affect the Big Ten's recent decision to not have a college football season this year.

Movie theaters and other similar venues remain closed still.
