"We are in a fight right now to save the republic, and every American needs to take this seriously. You need to wake up."
House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted the “lowlights” on Wednesday of several Democratic candidates who have emerged victorious in primaries across the country, noting that the party has increasingly embraced socialist and anti-American views.
Johnson sided with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who has argued that New York City socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, “Democratic” socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have taken “full control” of the Democratic Party.
“Across the country, Democrats have candidates winning primaries and rising through the ranks. Here’s a few of them,” Johnson began.
He first referenced California congressional candidate Mai Vang, a Sacramento city council member who has declined to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during multiple city council meetings. Vang previously explained her decision on social media, writing that she uses the moment to reflect on the “injustices and harm that continue to affect so many, both locally and across the globe, under this nation’s influence."
Johnson also highlighted New Jersey congressional candidate Adam Hamawy, whom he said “has ties to Al-Qaeda and other terrorists.” Hamaway, a plastic surgeon running in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, has called for abolishing ICE and dismantling the Department of Homeland Security entirely. Reports have resurfaced a testimony Hamawy gave in 1995 in defense of Omar Abdel-Rahman, a convicted terrorist whose followers carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Johnson additionally spoke on Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic Socialist candidate in New York who was endorsed by Mamdani. Chevalier has previously advocated for abolishing US borders, eliminating police and prisons, and seizing private property. She also co-founded Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), which has called for the “total eradication of Western civilization.”
The speaker highlighted several other Democratic candidates as examples of the party’s far-left ideological shift. Among them was Arizona congressional candidate Joanna Mendoza, who has supported decriminalizing transgender prostitution. Also among them was Iowa Democratic candidate Lindsay James, who previously apologized on a campaign website for being white, citing the privilege that comes with being a “white, cis-gender, able-bodied, middle-class, college-educated woman.”
Iowa Democratic congressional candidate Sara Trone Garriott, while training to become a Lutheran minister, performed a Satanist wedding. New Jersey Democratic congressional nominee Rebecca Bennett previously said that she stopped attending church because she did not want to be around “people who voted for Trump.”
“This is just a sampling,” Johnson warned. “And these kind of people have been popping up. You’ve been hearing me say for weeks, there are mini Mamdani’s popping up all around the country. It is a dangerous thing. This is not a joke.”
"We are in a fight right now to save the republic, and every American needs to take this seriously. You need to wake up,” the speaker said.
