"Renee Good. I want you to remember her name. She’s a martyr, she sacrificed.”
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison spoke Wednesday at a student walkout and rally at the Minnesota State Capitol, where he condemned the “surge” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents operating in the state.
Students in St. Paul held a walk-out and gathered at the Capitol to protest expanded ICE operations in Minnesota this week. Ellison addressed the crowd, telling students that as attorney general, he serves as their “lawyer.”
“That is why I sued the Department of Homeland Security two days ago,” Ellison said.
Minnesota, along with the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, filed suit against the federal government seeking a temporary restraining order to halt or limit ICE operations in the state. A federal judge ruled Wednesday against issuing the restraining order.
Ellison claimed the increased ICE presence has led to violence and widespread disruption, saying people have been “beat up,” stopped going to school or work, and that the enforcement actions resulted in the death of Renee Good. He referred to Good as a “martyr” in the anti-ICE movement and said she “sacrificed” her life.
“We sued them. We sued them because they are breaking the law,” Ellison said. “They are breaking the law. Now let me tell you, this escalation, this surge which is resulting in not only people being beat up, not only people being thrown to the ground, not only people not going to school, not only people not going to work, but it’s resulted in the death of one of our neighbors, Renee Good. I want you to remember her name. She’s a martyr, she sacrificed.”
“This lady, she died when she was trying to help the most vulnerable neighbors in our community,” Ellison claimed.
Good was shot and killed by a federal agent earlier this month after she blocked a roadway with her vehicle in an effort to impede ICE operations. Authorities have said she then drove her vehicle in the direction of an agent, striking him, at which point the agent opened fire.
