Mitch McConnell's Senate absence to stretch on during rehabilitation

Ailing Kentucky Senator,Mitch McConnell released a statement on the his ongoing health struggles saying that the he would not be able to return to work and still remain in rehab.

“I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders,” McConnell said in his statement. “Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky this Saturday. “There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton. When I first attended forty-two years ago, Fancy Farm was a pretty lonely place to be a Republican. But, my, how times have changed.”

The 84 year old politician has been absent from his duties in the senate for more than a month since a June 14 fall sent him to the hospital and has posted pictures of him in the hospital with his wife Elaine Chao which have fueled online rumors that the seven term senator might be deceased.

The Office of Attending physician also released a statement regarding McConnell’s health.

“Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June,” McConnell’s doctor said in the joint press release. “OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care. Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”

McConnell, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection in 2026, has faced increasing questions about his health after a series of public medical incidents over the past several years, including multiple falls and episodes in which he appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters. Despite his growing absence, the longtime Republican leader has continued to issue statements and monitor Senate business from rehabilitation. His decision to miss the annual Fancy Farm Picnic, one of Kentucky's largest political events, underscores the extent of his ailments.
