More than 1,200 illegal immigrants were arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, during a federal immigration enforcement operation that targeted individuals who have been convicted or charged with other crimes.
Marcos Charles, executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, told Fox News that the sweep resulted in many violent criminals being removed from the streets. The operation, dubbed “Operation Safe Community – Atlanta,” was specifically focused on targeting criminal illegal immigrants.
“We arrested over 1,200 aliens, illegal aliens, out in the Atlanta, Georgia area. More than half of those people had criminal histories,” Charles said during an appearance on Fox & Friends.
“We’re talking about sex crimes, assault and battery, some with DUI convictions, domestic violence. These individuals needed to be taken off the street, not only because they’re criminals, but because they are here illegally in the United States,” he added.
“Every day, the men and women of ICE ERO were out in the streets across the nation, enforcing the immigration laws as set forth by Congress. So we’re keeping the community safe. We’re [going to] be traveling all over the United States doing the same thing,” Charles said.
DHS highlighted several individuals arrested during the operation who had previous criminal convictions or arrests. One Mexican national had prior convictions for “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine and driving while intoxicated.” Another illegal immigrant from El Salvador had previous arrests for domestic battery or family violence, cruelty to children, disorderly conduct, and driving while intoxicated.
DHS also identified a Mexican national who was a registered sex offender and had criminal convictions for sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Another Mexican national arrested during the operation had prior convictions for driving under the influence, endangering a child, and probation violation.
ICE recorded its highest monthly total ever in July, recording approximately 51,000 immigration arrests.
