Trump is slated to meet with Zelensky on Monday at the White House after meeting with Putin on Friday in Alaska, where negotiations were discussed about peace between Russia and Ukraine. The comments from Trump came during a call with European leaders and invited those on the call to join in on the White House meeting, per the outlet.
Trump as well as administration officials briefed Zelensky on the way back from the summit in Alaska. In the briefing, the president as well as the other officials said that Putin had demanded Ukraine cede two regions (Donetsk and Luhansk) to Russia in order to reach an agreement. Russia currently controls all of Luhansk, but only 75 percent of Donetsk.
The front lines would freeze where they are, something that Putin presented as a concession to Ukraine, according to the report. After the Alaska meeting with Putin on Friday, the leaders held a press conference where both of them said that there had been "great progress" in the negotiations.
Trump told the press that it was a "productive meeting," and added that they agreed on "many, many points," but there were "a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we’ve made some headway."
"So there’s no deal until there’s a deal," Trump added in his remarks. "I will call up NATO in a little while, I will call up the various people that I think are appropriate, and, of course, call up President Zelensky and tell them about today’s meeting. It’s ultimately up to them." Putin also revealed that if Trump had been president instead of former President Joe Biden in 2022, that the war with Ukraine would not have started.
