The New York Daily News fired 16 people at the outlet in what the Daily News Union called a "Valentine's Day Massacre." This comes as there have been similar layoffs at other news outlets across the industry at the Washington Post, CBS News, and others

The Executive Editor at the Daily News, Andrew Julien, said in a post to X, "To ensure we are well-positioned to achieve that mission, we are taking a number of strategic steps to better align resources with reader needs and growth opportunities that require the elimination of a number of positions across the organization including de-emphasizing breaking crime news coverage outside of the NYC area."

"We are continuing our commitment to local news and, as always, prioritizing newsgathering resources by identifying operational efficiencies. Our city-based Metro and Sports coverage will not be affected. I am available to speak with anyone who has questions and look forward to continuing our work to keep New Yorkers informed in a comprehensive and meaningful way with robust journalism that makes our community better," he added.

The Daily News Union posted a photo on X of a mock frontpage paper: "Valentines Day Massacre at Hometown Paper," along with a picture of the owner of Alden Global Capital, Heath Freeman. Another headline on the photo read, "Alden Global Capital layoff targets more than quarter of union."

“These layoffs, which are the direct result of the repellent corporate greed that Alden Global Capital is known for, are being done without any concern for the future of The Daily News,” the union said

“The vampiric owners of The News are seeking to drain the lifeblood of the paper," one staffer at the outlet told the New York Post. “The cowards running the show refuse to face their staff to answer questions as to why there’s no metro editor, no statehouse reporter and just one person covering City Hall."
