Abdelhadi also celebrated the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and called for a ‘student intifada.’
Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s half-sister is a far-left University of Chicago professor who has advocated for a “stateless, communized society,” called for abolishing police, was arrested during an anti-ICE protest for spitting on a cop, celebrated the October 7, 2023 massacre, and has called for a “student intifada.”
According to the Washington Free Beacon, El-Sayed, who is running to become Michigan’s next senator, recently released an ad highlighting his family’s Michigan roots. Missing from the campaign spot was his maternal half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a University of Chicago professor and activist who has publicly embraced communist politics and participated in left-wing demonstrations.

Abdelhadi was arrested in October 2025 following a protest at the Broadview ICE facility outside Chicago. Prosecutors alleged that she “knowingly and intentionally” spit on an Illinois state trooper. She was charged with felony aggravated battery.
At Socialism 2025, Abdelhadi also described the University of Chicago as an institution she could use to build political power. “F*ck the University of Chicago... but it’s my best shot at power,” Abdelhadi said, calling her employer an “evil colonial landlord.”

“We don’t have power... but I work at one of the biggest employers in Chicago... a place with thousands of people I could potentially organize... This is where I need to build power,” she said.
The remarks came amid scrutiny of Abdelhadi’s rhetoric about the university. The school announced an investigation into her conduct after she publicly condemned the institution as a “colonial landlord” and “police force,” adding, “like, f*ck the University of Chicago, it’s evil. Like, you know?”
Abdelhadi coauthored “Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune,” a fictional account depicting the collapse of capitalism and the creation of a new communist social order. The book portrays a society where police have been abolished, the nuclear family has been replaced by communal caretaking arrangements, and Israel is destroyed following what the novel calls a “Final Intifada.”
“I wrote an entire novel about transitioning out of capitalism to a stateless, communized society,” Abdelhadi wrote on X in 2024. She has separately declared, “I’m over capitalism, over wage slavery. Over it.”
Abdelhadi also celebrated the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. On the morning of the attacks, she posted, “Good morning, freedom.” She also posted a video while wrapped in a keffiyeh that began, “I wanna start by saying Allahu Akbar.”

Following the attacks, Abdelhadi called for a “student intifada” in the United States, writing, “Let Palestine break this country wide open. Long live the student intifada.”

Her rhetoric also included criticism of prominent Democrats who condemned the Hamas attack. On the morning of Oct. 7, Abdelhadi responded to Sen. Bernie Sanders after he called the attack “horrifying,” writing: “What a disappointment. If you can't stand with a ppl that have been held in an open prison for 16 years finally fighting their oppressors, how can you claim to stand for justice?”

Her positions overlap with El-Sayed’s on several major political issues. During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, El-Sayed said, “We do need to defund the police,” while Abdelhadi went further and called for police abolition, including on college campuses. She also wrote, “Good morning, jummuah mubarak and f*ck the police.”

El-Sayed participated in Michigan’s “uncommitted” movement, encouraging Democrats to vote against then-President Joe Biden during the 2024 Democratic primary over what he called Biden’s “disaster in Gaza.”

She has said that she hopes “the whole world rises against US empire” and has publicly decried Thanksgiving as well as Independence Day.
Abdelhadi, who has publicly identified in videos “as a Palestinian,” publicly celebrated her brother’s Senate campaign launch, calling herself “a proud little sister.”
