Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of attempting to assassinate 2024 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday as he was playing golf at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, has been charged with two gun counts in relation to the incident.
According to Axios, Routh was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He appeared before Magistrate Judge Ryon M. McCabe on Monday morning.
Officials said during the hearing that Routh could face up to 15 years in prison for a conviction on the first count, and a possible five-year sentence on the second count, the Associated Press reported. A bond hearing has been set for September 23.
Trump was ushered off his golf course on Sunday after Secret Service agents spotted the suspect, who was around 300 to 500 yards from Trump, and opened fire. The suspect fled and was later arrested on I-95.
Officials said on Sunday that the suspect had been in the "bushes" and that "an AK-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them, and a GoPro" had been found in the bushes at the golf course.
"He believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it," Trump said of the suspect on Monday.
