BREAKING: US Coast Guard discovers debris field within search area for missing Titanic submersible

"A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic. Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information," The US Coast Guard Northeast wrote on Twitter.

Five people were on board the OceanGate Titan submersible when it went missing on Sunday. The trip costs $250,000 per person to visit the famed wreckage of the Titanic 12,500 feet below the surface.

Inside the 5-person submersible is French Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son.

When the submersible went missing, it contained around 96 hours of oxygen supply.

German adventurer Arthur Loibl recounted his 2021 experience aboard the vessel, calling it a "suicide mission" with concerning "red flags."

"The first submarine didn't work, then a dive at 1,600 meters had to be abandoned," he said adding that the bracket of the stabilization tube was "reattached with zip ties."

According to CBS News, a Canadian plane assisting in search efforts detected underwater noises in the search area on Tuesday, with another plane hearing what has been described as banging noises on Wednesday as well.

"With respect to the noises, specifically, we don't know what they are, to be frank with you," Coast Guard Capt. Jamie Frederick said at a briefing Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, five vessels were searching from the surface for the submersible. Frederick said that number was expected to double within 24 to 48 hours.
