BREAKING UPDATE: Ilhan Omar claims Trump is ‘weaponizing’ law enforcement with DHS raid on her home
“Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice.”
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents stormed Rep. Ilhan Omar's home early on Monday morning in a pre-dawn raid. This comes as she is being investigated over immigration paperwork when she came to the country from Somalia. She has claimed that the operation was no more than the Trump administration "weaponiz[ing] federal law enforcement."
According to Fox News, the raid is part of a criminal fraud investigation into how she came to the country. "Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation," a DOJ spokesman said. Video captured agents taking boxes out of Omar's home during the raid.
In response to the raid, Omar posted to X, claiming that Trump has "weaponize[d] federal law enforcement" to go after her. "I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation," she wrote.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in response to the raid, "The Trump administration's raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump's adversaries."
"For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations. Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family," he added.
Fox reported that two sources confirmed the raid after Border Czar Tom Homan confirmed in September that there is an ongoing "criminal" investigation into Omar.
Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in September that there is an "ongoing investigation" into Omar. At the time he said, "Something's gonna happen." He said at the time that Omar "married her brother to try to bring him into the United States." He noted that her brother now "lives in London."
"If we actually move a case forward, it's not a political case, it's an actual case because they did things wrong," he added, saying that "there is no expiration" to immigration fraud if she is found to have committed immigration fraud when she moved to the US.
“There may be more to this, the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with," Mullin noted at the time.
Video of the raid showed HSI agents outside Omar's home, and when reporters asked one of the agents what was going on, he replied that it was "police activity" and would not discuss details of the raid.
Omar obtained her citizenship in 2000, reportedly at the age of 17. Some, however, have claimed that she was 18, which would have changed the process by which she would have had to become a citizen. She has denied allegations that she married her brother to get him into the US.
Omar has previously said regarding criminal charges against President Donald Trump, "Our democracy rests on the rule of law. When someone—no matter how powerful they are—is suspected of a criminal act, our justice system investigates, charges, and convicts them in accordance with due process."
