BREAKING: Obama admin investigated Ilhan Omar's alleged marriage to brother in 2016, found evidence of fraud

Per the New York Times, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security investigated her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in the summer of 2016, under the Obama administration. Current and former officials familiar with the matter told the outlet that some evidence was found that the marriage was fraudulent.

The officials said that the case stalled mainly because prosecutors had concluded that the potential felony crime fell outside the five-year statute of limitations.

Federal agents in Minnesota opened an investigation as Omar, who was on the brink of becoming the first Somali American elected to a state legislature, was on the campaign trail in 2016. Somali community message boards and conservative outlets were circulating claims at the time that she had once been married to a sibling.

Two former officials said that her brother, Elmi obtained a provisional two-year green card based on the marriage to Omar. The officials said that Elmi had sought to make the status permanent, but left the US and abandoned the green card petition when immigration officials requested additional evidence regarding the validity of the marriage. He has been living in the UK.

Among those who were investigating the matter in the early phases were an FBI agent specializing in public corruption and civil rights cases, and two agents at Homeland Security Investigations.

A source familiar with the matter told Fox News that a US Attorney in Minnesota, appointed by then-President Joe Biden, shut down the probe in 2021.

In 2009, Omar and Elmi got married in a Christian, with a Christian pastor signing off on their marriage certificate. This marriage was filed with the state. She was also married to her other husband, with whom she was married in a Muslim ceThey split in 2017. While still in that marriage, Omar filed joint tax returns with Ahmed Hirsi in 2014 and 2015, whom she had married in an Islamic ceremony in 2001. They legally got married in early 2018, and divorced in late 2019.

Questions regarding Omar’s marriage to her alleged brother have come back into the spotlight after federal agents raided her DC home in early October, in which her passport, phone, and computer were confiscated. Recent court documents related to the case have listed Omar’s name as “Ilhan Omar Nur Said Elmi.” A marriage certificate for Omar’s sister lists their father as being named “Nur Said Elmi.”
