Suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, threatened to commit suicide rather than surrender to the police after he was confronted by his father over the fatal shooting of Kirk at Utah Valley University, according to a report from the New York Post.
The father of Robinson recognized his son from the photos that were released by the FBI on Thursday, leading to him confronting his son about the assassination of Kirk when he returned to his home, sources familiar with the matter told the outlet.
Robinson "fessed up to the horrific shooting when his dad asked if he pulled the trigger — but originally refused to turn himself in to law enforcement," one of the sources said of the suspect. Robinson said that he would rather kill himself than turn himself in to the police.
His parent was then able to convince his son to speak to a youth minister, who also happened to be a US Marshals Service officer. Robinson was then arrested after the minister called a deputy at a federal agency. He was later hit with aggravated murder charges.
In the investigation, it was learned that there were multiple references to Antifa as well as furry subculture on engraved bullet casings the shooter fired as well as those that were not fired. Kirk was speaking to students during his "Prove Me Wrong" tour on Wednesday when he was struck in the neck by a gunshot. He later died at Timpanogos Hospital in Orem, Utah.
Since his death, there have been a number of vigils held around the country to honor Kirk's life and legacy.
