Chuck Schumer told Joe Biden it would be better for country if he dropped out: report

It has been revealed that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly told Joe Biden it would be better for the country if he dropped out of the race. ABC News' Jonathan Karl said that the New York senator pleaded with the president during a one-on-one meeting between the two in Delaware on Saturday.

When pressed by Karl, Schumer's office did not deny any of what he claimed had been said, with a spokesperson only noting that "Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus."

"I am told that the pressure from Democratic leaders for Biden to get out of the race has intensified," Karl said. "One person who has been out there publicly defending Biden told me just a short while ago Biden is going to see the whole house of cards come down soon."

Shifting his attention to the meeting between Biden and Schumer, Karl said he was told that Schumer "forcefully made the case that it would be better for Biden, better for the Democratic Party, and better for the country if he were to bow out of the race."

Karl explained that when he went to Schumer's office to tell them he was going to repeat what he had heard, they responded with "absolutely no denial." He added that his sources told him Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries "expressed similar views directly to the president."

Despite publicly claiming to be supporting Biden, Schumer has reportedly been conveying to donors an openness to seeing another candidate take the president's role as leader of the Democratic Party. He held those sentiments even before the debate with Donald Trump, which catapulted Biden's shortcomings into the limelight and led to a flood of Democrats calling on him to step down and let someone else go up against Trump.
