Dem rep eyes plan to primary Biden in 2024

Phillips is a three-term Democrat from the state of Minnesota and is eyeing a run for the White House according to a report from the MinnPost. He has been dubbed to be a more moderate pick over the president.

The representative was one of the first Democrats in Congress to publicly question another term of Biden as US President. In an interview about a year ago, in response to whether or not he would support Biden, Phillips said, “No... I think the country would be well-served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats who step up.”

According to Politico, Phillips has been receiving inquiries about how willing he would be to primary Biden, and will be meeting with donors to talk about the race.

Phillips is unlikely to mount the primary challenge unless Biden's health worsens or his poll numbers drop drastically, according to Politico, because he does not want to weaken Biden's standing for the American people.

A report from the Star Tribune confirmed that Phillips was talking about running and he told Axios that “the reporting is accurate."

Phillips flipped a GOP seat in the state of Minnesota in 2018 and has been reelected twice. He is on his third term in office.

Other challengers include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has bemoaned the leftward shift of the Democratic party. Another primary candidate is Mariane Williamson, who ran in 2020 until she ultimately dropped out of the race. Williamson has written several self-help books and rode on the campaign message, "Turning Love into a Political Force."

Phillips has been hesitant to show support for Biden since at least July of last year.

"I’m impressed by the Biden presidency and find the president to be a man of equal parts competency and compassion. I also believe. American democracy is made stronger by competition," Phillips said at the time of Biden's second term announcement. "Coronations are antithetical to democracy."
