“We call for a swift investigation into these incidents and for the Congressman to immediately end his campaign to be California’s next Governor.”
Democrats have been distancing themselves from left-wing Rep. Eric Swalwell, who is running for governor of California after sexual assault allegations were made against him. From lawmakers to the teachers' unions, many have also suspended their endorsements of the lawmaker and candidate ahead of the gubernatorial primary.
Four women have come forward, alleging sexual misconduct from Swalwell, including a former staffer who claimed that he raped her when she was heavily intoxicated, according to a report from CNN. “I was pushing him off of me, saying no,” the former staffer said of the alleged incident she said left her bruised and bleeding in 2024. “He didn’t stop.” She said it was the second time it had occurred. Three other women also detailed their alleged interactions with Swalwell.
After the news of the alleged sexual assaults broke on Friday, Democrats have been trying to distance themselves from him. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in response to the allegations, "Following the incredibly disturbing sexual assault accusations against Congressman Eric Swalwell, we call for a swift investigation into these incidents and for the Congressman to immediately end his campaign to be California's next Governor. This is unacceptable of anyone - certainly not an elected official - and must be taken seriously. We commend the courageous women for sharing their experiences. In this and all circumstances, we must ensure that those who come forward with allegations of sexual assault and harassment are heard and respected. All perpetrators of sexual assault and harassment must be held accountable."

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also distanced herself from the lawmaker, posting to X, "Mr. Swalwell should end his campaign and resign from Congress immediately. His conduct is incompatible with elected office. The women who came forward deserve to be heard and deserve justice."

Democrat operative and candidate for governor in California, Katie Porter, said about the incident, "In light of the allegations of sexual assault, Eric Swalwell should resign from Congress and end his campaign for public office. But those decisions do not absolve him of taking responsibility for his misconduct, especially when he has attempted to silence and retaliate against these victims. These allegations merit full investigations, and these women deserve the right to pursue justice. Too often, men escape any consequence for sexual misconduct by stepping out of power. That is a first and necessary step towards justice because it limits the ability for further harm. I stand with these women as they seek justice."

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said regarding the allegations, “This extremely sensitive matter must be appropriately investigated with full transparency and accountability. As I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign."
Senator Adam Schiff has also called out Swalwell as the allegations have taken place. He also rescinded his endorsement of him in the California gubernatorial race.

“I have read the San Francisco Chronicle’s account and I am deeply distressed by its allegations. This woman was brave to come forward, and we should take her story seriously. I am withdrawing my endorsement immediately, and believe that he should withdraw from the race,” Schiff said.
Swalwell has denied the allegations, calling them "flat false."

“These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They are absolutely false. They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything I have," Swalwell said in a video posted to X. He added that they come on the "eve an election" where he has been the "frontrunner."
