Federal authorities executed a search warrant on Monday against Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN), during which they seized notebooks, personal computers, and her passport, people familiar with the matter told the New York Post. She is the target of separate federal investigations.
Prosecutors in Minnesota are looking into potential immigration fraud, and the DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro is also investigating the finances of Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the end goal of the case against Omar is to strip her of citizenship and see to it that she is deported. Citizenship can be revoked if authorities find that it was awarded through misrepresentation of the facts about one's background.
The investigation regarding her immigration status reportedly is connected to allegations that she was not a minor when she was naturalized automatically with her parents when they became citizens. Under immigration law, minors can get automatic naturalization with their parents, but the same cannot be said once you are an adult. Omar claimed to be 17 years old in 2000 when she was naturalized, but some have claimed that she was one year older, which would have made her an adult and ineligible for the automatic naturalization.
The Trump administration has recently moved to strip around 40 people of citizenship who have been accused of criminal activity.
Some records have said that Omar's birthday is October 4, 1981. However, she has said that it is 1982. Homeland Security Investigations looked into the date during the Biden administration but did not end up going through with a full-scale investigation.
Omar has said that she does not have a birth certificate due to her family's displacement from Somalia. Despite the statute of limitations, if Omar has repeatedly been using a false birth date on official forms, she could be prosecuted.
