An illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone who was working as an Uber Eats driver has been arrested, and an ICE detainer lodged after a horrific incident involving a 15-year-old girl in Baltimore.
Abubakarr Barrie, 23, allegedly picked up the girl in his unlicensed cab on October 22 and took her to his basement apartment and stabbed her multiple times “all over the body” before she managed to escape. Barrie has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and kidnapping.
The girl sustained injuries to her chest, ear, shoulder, back, and ribs and was stabbed at least five times. She also sustained a collapsed lung. She allegedly began scratching and clawing at her attacker, then was able to grab a fire extinguisher and hit him with it before escaping.
Video has been released from a homeowner’s surveillance camera showing the girl escaping the basement with “no shoes or clothes,” after 43 minutes of arriving at the apartment with Barrie, according to the New York Post.
The homeowner said, “I just see her bolt, like she just opens the door and runs.” Police found the girl about a mile from the home.
She allegedly told investigators that Barrie, “immediately became violent,” and put her in a headlock after she realized that he was going in the wrong direction after she had requested that he drive her to a take-out place.
After he drove to the basement apartment, he apparently, “pushed her down a tiny set of steps leading into the home, led her to a tiny room and advised her to put her phone down and not to scream.”
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a statement that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer that seeks to stop authorities from releasing Barrie from custody.
Barrie was arrested in New York City in July, charged with third-degree possession of a forged instrument. He was released, even though ICE had lodged a detainer in that case as well.
According to CBS News, Barrie’s attorney in court said that he worked for Uber Eats and was working towards a GED. He has maintained that he is innocent.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said, “This tragedy would never have happened were it not for the multiple failures of sanctuary policies. First, Biden’s open borders let this monster into our country, then sanctuary politicians in New York refused to hand him over to ICE and released him after a previous arrest three months before this horrific crime.”
Barrie entered the US illegally in Dec. 2023 through Arizona. He was apprehended at the border but released into the country during the Biden administration.
