“Thanks to [President Trump’s] Working Families Tax Cuts, more Americans will have access to training that prepares them for high-skilled, high-paying jobs.”
An Iowa EMT program has become the first approved Workforce Pell program in the nation, marking a major expansion of federal Pell Grant funding. The state announced that Iowa Central Community College’s EMT program was approved as the nation’s first Workforce Pell program. The approval comes after the creation of the new Workforce Pell Grant program under the One Big Beautiful Bill, which expanded Pell grant eligibility to cover certain short-term, career-focused training programs beginning July 1, 2026.
Workforce Pell gives eligible students the ability to use federal Pell Grant funds for approved workforce training programs centered around high-skill careers. Eligible programs must generally provide between 150 and 599 hours of instruction and be eight to 15 weeks long, according to QC Times.
The announcement was made in a press conference featuring US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.
“The Iowa Central EMT program is making history as the first approved Workforce Pell program in the nation,” McMahon said. “As aspiring EMT professionals, you represent the front-line strength that holds our nation together, answering the call to help when Americans need you most. You show that when lives hang in the balance, it isn't a prestigious diploma that makes the difference, but the rigorous training, precision, coordination, and practice skill that you each bring to the job.”
McMahon explained that the new program is reflective of a broader effort to provide alternatives to traditional college.
“At a time when too many are saddled with high debt and degrees with limited return, students and workers are seeking faster, more flexible ways to gain the skills employers need, pathways that honor talent, reward effort, and open opportunity without years of schooling and financial strain,” she added.
In a post on X, the US Department of Labor applauded the move, writing, “Thanks to [President Trump’s] Working Families Tax Cuts, more Americans will have access to training that prepares them for high-skilled, high-paying jobs.”
