Philly man pushed onto SEPTA tracks in altercation, killed by oncoming train

According to NBC 10, officials said the incident occurred at the SEPTA platform for the Market-Frankford line at 34th and Market streets in the University City section of West Philadelphia at around 4:30 pm.

Video shows the two men arguing, with the taller man telling the other man to "give me back my lighter."

The shorter man could be seen punching the taller man, pushing him off the platform and onto the tracks where a SEPTA train arrived seconds later, running the man over as onlookers screamed.

"Looked like, appeared to be some type of physical altercation. We don't know exactly what took place prior to that to initiate this, but it's being investigated at this point," Philadelphia Police Inspector Kpana Massaquoi told NBC10.

Philadelphia reporter for the Center Square Anthony Hennen wrote on X, "The death at a SEPTA station today, from what appears to be a scuffle over a lighter, shows how crucial it is to ruthlessly enforce quality-of-life rules."

The shorter man was taken into custody at 40th Street Station, the next station stop on the line, police said.

34th Street Station was closed for several hours on Thursday in addition to the area near the Drexel campus. Service between 30th and 40th streets has been rerouted with buses, SEPTA officials said.

SEPTA Police are investigating the incident.
