Americans left behind in Afghanistan respond to Senator Tom Cotton’s offer to help them get home
A spokesperson with Senator Cotton’s office says that they have heard from multiple US citizens who are unable to safely reach the US perimeter and are trapped behind Taliban checkpoints.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) announced Sunday that his office will do "everything in our power" to help rescue US citizens that are trapped behind Taliban checkpoints in Kabul.
"If you're an American stranded in Afghanistan, or know one who is, please contact my office immediately:(501) 223-9081 or evac@cotton.senate.gov," Senator Cotton said in a tweet on Sunday.
"The situation is dire, but we'll do everything in our power to help keep you informed and to help get you out," Cotton added.
A spokesperson with Senator Cotton's office says that they have heard from multiple US citizens who are unable to safely reach the US perimeter and are trapped behind Taliban checkpoints. They have been given no clear option on how to escape the dire situation, according to a reporter with The New York Times.
The United States deployed thousands of troops on Sunday to help rescue US citizens from the US embassy and those that are trapped in Kabul after the Taliban overtook the Afghan government. Afghan President Ghani fled the country after the Taliban entered the Capitol in Kabul. According to a Taliban spokesperson, they entered the capital seeking a "peaceful surrender."
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said members of the group would "be on standby on all entrances of Kabul until a peaceful and satisfactory transfer of power is agreed."
