The filing argues that Wilson has been “derelict in her duties for public safety.”
A recall effort has been filed against Socialist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, accusing her of neglecting her public-safety duties amid persistent crime concerns in several Seattle neighborhoods and turmoil surrounding the leadership of the Seattle Police Department.
The recall charges were filed by Seattle residents Melinda E. Jacobson and Dale L. Osterud, according to documents submitted to King County Elections and obtained by The Ari Hoffman Show.
The filing argues that Wilson has been “derelict in her duties for public safety,” citing the Seattle City Charter’s requirement that the mayor enforce city laws, direct subordinate officers and maintain peace and order.
Among the allegations, the filers accuse Wilson of making a “hasty, rash decision” to force the resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes during an ongoing murder investigation, following the shooting at the Bite of Seattle in July. They claim Barnes had brought stability to the department, improved recruitment, and maintained regular community engagement. His departure, they argue, created chaos within SPD, damaged public trust, and demonstrated fiscal irresponsibility during a city budget crisis.
The filing also highlights deteriorating conditions along North Aurora Avenue, where residents say they repeatedly contacted the mayor’s office about gun battles, bullets striking homes and businesses, prostitution and sex trafficking.
According to the recall charge, Wilson did not publicly address the situation until after a June neighborhood march. The filers also criticize the city’s removal of temporary barriers installed by residents to deter criminal activity, followed by the implementation of a limited SDOT barrier pilot.
Additional allegations focus on the Chinatown–International District, particularly the open-air drug market near 12th Avenue and Jackson Street, as well as crime and open drug use in Belltown and along Third Avenue.
The recall proponents further fault Wilson’s administration for failing to activate surveillance cameras installed in crime hot spots. The filing says cameras used during the World Cup were turned off afterward, while systems installed near Garfield High School and in Capitol Hill’s nightlife district remain inactive despite being budgeted and partially financed through a federal grant.
Wilson’s office disputed the merits of the effort while pointing to the administration’s policy agenda. “We're aware of the petition that has been filed. While it does not appear to have merit, our focus remains where it belongs: on making life safer and more affordable for the people of Seattle.
“Since taking office, we're delivering meaningful progress: expanding community crisis responder hours, launching universal school meals this September, banning rental junk fees, accelerating shelter expansion, expanding transit, investing in our libraries, and taking on unfair pricing at grocery stores. That work continues.
“The courts will address any questions. We will address the needs of Seattle,” a mayoral spokesperson said in a statement to The Ari Hoffman Show.
The filing is currently undergoing a technical review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. It has not yet been approved for circulation, and no signatures are currently being collected. If the filing meets the technical requirements, prosecutors will prepare a ballot synopsis and submit the case to King County Superior Court. A judge must then determine whether the charges establish malfeasance, misfeasance, or a violation of the oath of office.
Only if the charges clear those legal hurdles would proponents receive 180 days to gather the required signatures. King County Elections would then verify the signatures and schedule an election if enough eligible voters sign the petition.
King County officials noted that most recall efforts never make it through the legal review process.
According to King County Elections, the last Seattle recall to reach the ballot targeted then-City Councilmember Kshama Sawant in 2021. Voters narrowly elected to retain her. The last Seattle mayor to face a recall election was Wes Uhlman in 1975, who also survived.
The most recent successful recall in King County occurred in 2018, when voters removed Black Diamond Councilmember Patricia Pepper from office.
