On Wednesday, an arrest warrant was issued by the Toronto police for 80-year-old Peter Nygard, with nine pending charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement.

The offences with which the Finnish-Canadian former fashion exec and business mogul will be charged go back as far as 1987, and run through the year 2005. He has been previously compared to the famous and now-deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

According to CTV News Toronto, Nygard is also already facing multiple other charges related to human trafficking in New York's Southern District. Nygard on Friday formally agreed and gave his consent to being extradited to face charges there.

It is uncertain, in the light of this new information, if Nygard may be tried first in the US or Canada. Brian Greenspan, Nygard's lawyer, stated in response to the issuing of the warrant:

"The minister will have to make a decision as to whether or not he will await the outcome of the Canadian charges before he extradites or whether or not he will seek assurances from the United States that once they deal with the charges in the United States, they will expeditiously return him to Toronto under transfer of prisoner treaty or some of the mutual legal assistance treaties we have with the United States and that once that they have dealt with him there, he will be returned to Toronto."

"Those are two options that the minister has, whoever the minister might be, because right now we don't have a Minister of Justice."
