On Wednesday, the only Denny's restaurant in Oakland, California served up its last Grand Slam and closed up shop after 54 years in business.

The location was a favorite among locals, but management decided to cease operations in response to the growing threat out-of-control crime posed to customers and employees.

At exactly 1 pm, the restaurant at 601 Hegenberger Road closed for good.

"Denny's has been honored to serve the Oakland community over the last 54 years," management said in a notice posted to the door. "Closing a restaurant location is never an easy decision or one taken lightly. However, the safety and well-being of Denny's team members and valued guests is our top priority. Weighing those factors, the decision has been made to close this location."

Management offered its "heartfelt thanks to the team members and the local community for their love of the Denny's brand," noting that employees who are "able to relocate" will be "offered positions elsewhere, where available."

There are two other locations nearby, one in Emeryville to the north, and one in Hayward to the south.

In an interview with KTVU, one resident and frequent customer said it's "terrible that Oakland's like this," pointing out that the Denny's was "probably the oldest business on the block."

"When I was out of state, I was proud of where I'm from," he added, "but now, I just kinda shake my head because of all the crime going on."

The move comes just days after the In-N-Out Burger on 8300 Oakport Street announced that it would be shutting down in March due to rising crime rates.

"We have made the decision to close our In-N-Out Burger location in Oakland, California, due to ongoing issues with crime," said Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick. "Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our Customers and Associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies."
