"I’m doing what I can to protect my right to choose. I am choosing me."
Because they believe that President-elect Donald Trump plans to make abortion illegal everywhere in the United States, women are getting sterilized or making themselves infertile. And they’re taking pride in their decision as a bold political statement. Trump has said repeatedly that he would not back a law making abortion illegal nationwide.
The women spoke to Newsweek about their decision and their procedures – all to ensure they never have to get pregnant or deliver a child. Trump will only be in office for four years but sterilization is forever.
Eden Ixora, 25, of Florida, is content creator for an OnlyFans site. She told Newsweek that she is horrified about the possibility of pregnancy. “For me, the idea of getting pregnant is worse than death.” She explained that to avoid ever having to endure this condition she is preparing to have a bilateral salpingectomy — the removal of her fallopian tubes.
“For me it was a call to action. A need to get this locked in so I don’t have to live in fear that at any moment some random guy can completely destroy my life,” Ixora told the outlet. “For me the idea of getting pregnant is worse than death. I’m doing what I can to protect my right to choose. I am choosing me.”
The model didn’t reply to The New York Post when queried about her decision. But she is hardly alone in achieving her objective of never being able to have children.
“If I am to be denied any rights in the next four (or more) years, I will not give them up without a fight,” Lydia Echols, 28, of Texas, told Newsweek. She is also planning to have her fallopian tubes removed.
Another unidentified 39-year-old woman who had already been under the knife for the same operation, said she was “forced” into such a rash decision. “I am not happy that I felt forced into a surgery I did not want to alter my body, I feel like the election tied my hands and forced me to be sterilized — that is horrible.”
Another woman who admitted that children were never something she and her husband wanted talked about the incoming Trump administration told Newsweek.she "paid way too much attention to the vitriol Trump repeatedly spit during his previous term" and that she is "keenly aware of the people he keeps around him and in his ear, who all seem to see women as incubators and possessions to subjugate."
She had booked the sterilization surgery before the presidential election and now says she was “fully planning to cancel the surgery the day after the election, assuming Kamala won.” But she insists, as others do, that she had no choice. “With Trump’s victory, we quickly learned that my choice to cancel the surgery had been taken from me,” she said. “This isn’t a wanted procedure, but one of necessity due to the politics and subjugation coming our way.”
