A high school in Oregon is set to host an "all ages" drag performance on January 7 with the goal of "bring[ing] visibility" to the LGBTQ community.
The event will take place from 1-4 pm on Sunday, January 7 at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, a town about 10 miles south of Portland.
"We are very excited to be putting on the first Oswego Drag Fest featuring Poison Waters!" the Lakeridge Gay Straight Alliance wrote in an Instagram post promoting the event.
"This is a family friendly event that is open to everyone in our community," they added. "Spread the word, we can't wait to see you there!" Drag shows and storytimes geared toward children have come under fire for inappropriate clothing and sexual acts being depicted in cities across the country, leading some states to ban the shows for minor audiences.
The afternoon will feature a performance by Portland-based drag queen Kevin Cook, who goes by the stage name Poison Waters, alongside other guests. It will be complete with a show, storytime, and an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.
The GSA suggested a donation of $15, with a portion of all proceeds going to the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project has previously come under fire after a mother went undercover in an online chat with a representative of the organization and found the group pushing teens questioning their gender identity into irreversible treatments like hormones.
According to Libs of TikTok, parents were upset that a drag event is being held at the school.
"A bunch of parents reached out to me about this," she wrote in a post on X. "Parents are very upset. School doesn't care. They completely disregarded all parents' concerns."
In response, one user suggested that parents should not just sit idly by, but take matters into their own hands and "barge in and disrupt their drag time session."
"If Pro-Hamas can do it in the capitol with 0 consequences," he added, "surely parents can do it since their kids attend this place."
Others, including Libs of TikTok herself, called out the GSA for locking the comments on its original post, thereby preventing parents from sounding off about their concerns.
