O'Toole gets tough on China while Trudeau shows gutless cowardice

O’Toole is showing strong leadership with his tough response, as he makes it clear that Canada won’t be threatened and pushed around.

Following the disgraceful threats against Canadians issued by China’s ambassador Cong Peiwu, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole issued this response:

“A threat to Canadians anywhere, is a threat to Canadians everywhere.

My statement on the Chinese Ambassador’s remarks about those fleeing Hong Kong to seek asylum in Canada:”

As O’Toole explains, Conservatives are therefore calling on the Ambassador to fully retract his remarks and issue a public apology. Should the Ambassador fail to do so expeditiously, we expect the government to withdraw his credentials.”

“Withdraw his credentials” is a polite way of saying Peiwu would have to leave the country if he doesn’t apologize.

That’s exactly what I called for shortly after Peiwu’s comments, as it is essential that Canada shows toughness and strength in response to China’s threats.

O’Toole is showing strong leadership with his tough response, as he makes it clear that Canada won’t be threatened and pushed around.

Of course, as you read this, you remember all the times Justin Trudeau has shown weakness towards China—and he’s doing it again.

In stark contrast to Erin O’Toole’s tough response, Justin Trudeau continues to choose the path of gutless cowardice. Cong Peiwu hasn’t been booted from the country. He hasn’t been ordered to apologize. He hasn’t been told to apologize or have his credentials removed. Basically, there has been no response from the Liberals.

Think about what that means for a moment:

The Chinese ambassador threatened 300,000 Canadian Citizens, and the Liberals have done nothing; no consequences, no real response. That is a complete dereliction of duty.

It’s an abandonment of the top job of the Canadian government: Protect Canadian Citizens.

Their weakness risks the lives not only of the 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong, but of all Canadians, as China sees this and becomes more emboldened.

History has shown beyond doubt that weakness only further encourages ruthless authoritarian states and dictators.

By contrast, strength and resolve generates respect and dissuades further threats, as the totalitarians look for weaker targets.

Canada, with our strong economic potential, hardworking population, high-level of technology, military alliance with the United States, and close ties to powerful free nations, could easily be strong and secure. All it takes is leadership by those in power, the kind of leadership shown by Erin O’Toole.

Unfortunately for all of us, gutless coward Justin Trudeau is currently in power, and that makes our nation weak and under constant threat.
