"I can’t believe I have to say this: but when I’m PM, there will be no male prisoners in female jails. Period."
Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre says if he is elected as the next prime minister, he will ban the current practice of sending biological men who say they are women to female prisons.
“Surreal: A man who killed his wife and two kids now claims he is a woman to go to a female prison. I can’t believe I have to say this: but when I’m PM, there will be no male prisoners in female jails. Period,” Poilievre posted on X.
Poilievre was referring to the case of a trans-identified male guilty of murdering his wife and two children in a gory killing that transpired in their Brossard apartment in 2022. A jury in Longueuil, QC on Dec. 16 found Mohamad Al Ballouz, 38, guilty on four charges: second-degree murder of his wife Synthia Bussières, first-degree murder of five-year-old Eliam and two-year-old Zac. He was also found guilty of arson.
Quebec Superior Justice Eric Downs sentenced Al Ballouz on Friday to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 25 years. He described Al Ballouz, who now wishes to be addressed as “Levana,” as having a “sadistic character” and being “deeply narcissistic.” The convicted killer has asked to be sent to the Joliette Institution for Women
The trial lasted five weeks, during which the court heard testimony from Crown prosecutor Eric Nadeau that Ballouz had stabbed Bussières 23 times during the night of Sept. 24 to 25, 2022. Nadeau described how Ballouz first killed his wife and then suffocated his children before trying to set the apartment on fire. Ballouz then ingested windshield washer fluid in what might have been a suicide attempt, according to CBC News.
Reaction on X to Poilievre’s comments was largely enthusiastic though some criticized Poilievre for supporting the Trudeau government’s transgender-friendly bills, including Bill C-16 that added “gender identity and gender expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination.”
