The Portland School Board (PSB) meeting was shutdown on Tuesday after individuals protesting a proposed student vaccine mandate attended the meeting without wearing masks. The district's vaccine mandate is up for a vote on November 2.
According to The Oregonian, a security officer asked unmasked attendees to put masks on but they refused, which resulted in the meeting ending after only fifteen minutes. Oregon Governor Kate Brown (D) recently imposed a statewide indoor mask policy.
Michelle DePass, chair of the school board, called off the meeting due to non-compliance and said it would resume virtually.
A parent who was there to testify against vaccine mandates on behalf of her child pleaded for individuals to comply so she could voice her concerns but wasn't given the opportunity, The Oregonian reports.
Once the school board left the meeting, demonstrators stayed to air grievances. A limited government activist group called People's Rights mobilized protesters to attend the meeting and oppose the vaccine mandate. The group's call-to-action resulted in individuals showing up from across the state as well as southwest Washington.
Not all that attended the school board meeting were against the proposed mandate, a small group of students that attend schools in the district showed up in favor of the mandate.
Cage, a student and member of the far-left militant group Antifa, told The Oregonian that he took offense to the protesters.
"I understand a lot of the rhetoric around here is aligned with the Proud Boys," Cage said of concerned community members. "As an antifascist, I take offense to that."
School Board meetings across the country have erupted in protests as concerned parents fight to have a say in their child's education; with controversial topics ranging from critical race theory and COVID mandates.
