Rabbi Yosef Neuman, the 71-year-old father and grandfather who was critically injured in an anti-Semitic attack in Monsey, New York in December, has died, according to Baltimore Jewish Life.
Rabbi Neuman was stabbed during a brutal attack at Rabbi Rottenberg’s Shu in Monsey, New York. The attack took place during Chanukah and Rabbi Neuman was one of five who was injured when a man entered the Rottenberg home with a machete and started stabbing people inside.
Rabbi Neuman had been in and out of hospital ever since.
At the time that he was first admitted to hospital, doctors believed that Rabbi Neuman had a small chance of surviving although, his family said that, “doctors [were] not optimistic about his chances to regain consciousness,” because the blade penetrated his skull and directly hit his brain.
If Rabbi Neuman was to recover partially, “doctors expect that he will have permanent damage to the brain; leaving him partially paralyzed and speech-impaired for the rest of his life,” said his family last month.
On March 29, Rabbi Neuman was pronounced dead. He leaves behind seven children and many grandchildren.
