"I’ll be opening a music store in Williamsburg, Va. The address is 455 Merrimack Trail. Grand opening is in a week or two!"
John Hinkley, most known for attempting to assassinate Reagan, posted to his X account, "I’ll be opening a music store in Williamsburg, Va. The address is 455 Merrimack Trail. Grand opening is in a week or two!"
On March 30, 1981, then-President Reagan as well as his Secret Service detail were leaving a speaking engagement in Washington, DC when Hinkley open fired on the group, per US Secret Service. Hinkley had been in the crowd and aimed his fire at the president. Reagan was hit under his arm and the bullet grazed his rib, but missed his heart.
Six shots total were fired before Special Agent Dennis McCarthy wrestled Hinkley to the ground. Hinkley was later found innocent by reason of mental illness. He was committed to St. Elizabeth’s hospital in the ruling's aftermath. The bullet that entered Reagan's lung was called a "devastator" bullet and was designed to explode on impact. However, the bullet that struck Reagan did not combust.
Hinkley was given unconditional release by a court in 2016, per Wavy News, and has wanted to perform folk music. He spent decades at the Washington mental health hospital prior to release. Some reacted to the post about his upcoming music store, with one saying, "Glad you're giving it a shot," in a reference to the shooting.
Another made a similar comment, asking, "Will you be working security john?"
