“This is a landmark arrest for ERO Baltimore, in that they secured a record 153 noncitizen sex offenders arrested in their area of operations during a single fiscal year."
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reported a record number of arrests of noncitizen sex offenders in Maryland, during the current fiscal year.
Authorities in Baltimore have arrested 153 noncitizen sex offenders in the 2024 fiscal year, ERO Baltimore announced in a press release. This record number of arrests follows the recent case of a Honduran man, Madai Gamaliel Amaya, who was deported in 2010 after serving time for a rape conviction. Amaya's case has drawn attention to the broader efforts of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in targeting noncitizen sex offenders.
After Amaya was taken into custody in August, ERO Executive Associate Director Daniel Bible praised the efforts of the Baltimore division, stating, “This is a landmark arrest for ERO Baltimore, in that they secured a record 153 noncitizen sex offenders arrested in their area of operations during a single fiscal year, but more importantly, there are 153 victims who need not fear their predators because of ERO officers.”
Amaya, who entered the country illegally at an unknown date several years ago, was first arrested in 2009 and charged with rape. After being sentenced to 10 years in prison, a judge suspended two years and six months of the sentence, and ICE filed a detainer to have him deported in 2013. However, in 2016, Amaya was caught attempting to re-enter the country illegally. He was convicted of unlawful entry in 2017 and was sent back to prison. After serving his sentence, he was deported again in 2018, but he managed to re-enter the US at an unknown time.
Amaya's most recent arrest has put him back in custody for deportation proceedings, as confirmed by ICE officials, according to Fox News.
