Two Republican members of Congress announced they have introduced a resolution that would prevent prisoners in Guantanamo Bay from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine before United States citizens. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Ashley Hinson (R-IA) introduced the resolution and said that those imprisoned for alleged terrorism crimes should only be able to receive the vaccine after every American has had the chance to, Fox News reported.
Hinson told Fox News, "Americans need to get the vaccine before terrorists, and it’s upsetting to me that was even a question." She added, "I think we need to make sure the administration is held accountable for this and that’s what I think this resolution does."
An official said Saturday that the Department of Defense paused its plan offering vaccinations to Guantánamo Bay detainees, after the Biden Administration signed off on distributing the vaccine to prisoners.
Republican congresswoman Stefanik had similar comments to congresswoman Hinson. "Every American should have access to vaccines before these heinous terrorists." Stefanik articulated, "It is inexcusable and un-American that President Biden is prioritizing vaccines for Gitmo terrorist detainees over American citizens, including veterans, first responders, 9/11 first responders, and seniors."
Assistant secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, John Kirby, announced Saturday "We’re pausing the plan to move forward, as we review force protection protocols. We remain committed to our obligations to keep our troops safe." He included, "No Guantanamo detainees have been vaccinated."
The Biden Administration previously signed off on distributing the coronavirus vaccine to Guantanamo prisoners as early as Monday, according to the order.
