Robert F Kennedy Jr has claimed that Joe Biden is a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump.

During a recent interview with CNN, the independent presidential candidate sounded the alarm over the current commander-in-chief, highlighting his administration's use of government agencies to target public officials and citizens alike.

"I can make the argument that President Biden is the much worse threat to democracy," Kennedy told Erin Burnett, "and the reason for that is President Biden is the first candidate in history – the first president in history that has used the federal agencies to censor political speech, so to censor his opponent."

"The First Amendment," he emphasized, "is the most important."

While Kennedy said that Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election did present a threat to democracy and were "appalling," he maintained that Biden's actions were more frightening.

"The greatest threat to democracy is not someone who questions election returns," Kennedy argued, "but a president of the United States who used the power of his office to force social media companies, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, to open a portal and give access of that portal to the FBI, the CIA, to the IRS ... to censor his political critics."

In a statement, Democratic National Committee senior adviser Mary Beth Cahill responded to Kennedy's statement.

"With a straight face Robert F Kennedy Jr said that Joe Biden is a bigger threat to democracy than Donald Trump because he was barred from pushing conspiracy theories online," she wrote. "There is no comparison to summoning a mob to the Capitol and promising to be a dictator on day one. Robert F Kennedy Jr laid to rest tonight any doubts that he's a spoiler candidate by pushing his MAGA talking points in prime time."

Recent polling has Kennedy at 17 percent with Biden and Trump at 39 and 43 percent, respectively.
