Growing apprehension among top Democratic Party supporters has emerged regarding the potential impact of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s candidacy on President Biden's reelection prospects in the upcoming election cycle.
A report by Fox News revealed a phone call hosted by key Democratic National Committee (DNC) figures, where the potential threat posed by Kennedy's candidacy was discussed.
Participants of the call, including Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA), Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, and Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow, expressed their worries about Kennedy emerging as a "spoiler" candidate detrimental to Biden's chances of securing a second term.
"We are doing everything in our power to get President Biden and Vice President Harris reelected. It's critical that we take seriously every possible obstacle to that goal. And let me be clear, that's exactly what Robert F. Kennedy is in this election. He's a spoiler," Davis said.
Garcia also stated in the call that Kennedy is a “tin foil hat conspiracy theorist,” a reference to the candidate’s comments regarding vaccines.
Furthermore, Garcia alleged Kennedy's campaign was backed by Trump mega-donors, suggesting a potential alignment with efforts to reelect Donald Trump. This allegation comes at a time when the campaigns of both political parties have concerns that Kennedy could take votes away from their respective nominees in key swing states.
The call with prominent Democratic Party voices came after Kennedy's announcement that he had chosen Nicole Shanahan as his choice for Vice-President. Shanahan is an attorney and is the ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
“Nicole and I both left the Democratic Party,” RFK Jr. said after announcing Shanahan as his VP pick. “Our values didn’t change. The Democratic Party did.”
A recent Harvard-Harris poll indicated Kennedy polling at 17 percent, posing a challenge to Biden, who garnered 39 percent, and Trump, who secured 43 percent in the same poll.
