"DHS doesn’t make the laws, we enforce the laws Congress passed," DHS Sec. Mullin replied.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin replied to Khanna's comments, saying "A reminder to defund the police Democrats like Ro Khanna: DHS doesn’t make the laws, we enforce the laws Congress passed. While anti-law enforcement liberals attack our officers, ICE is continuing to do the work mandated to us by Congress."
"ICE has increased detentions from 1,000 a day to 2,000 a day," Khanna said in a video. "Just last week, there were over 10,000 detentions. Now I know ICE hasn't been as much in the news lately, after the Alex Pretti killing, and the Renee Good killing, and the siege in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Many people were outraged by ICE, but we cannot ignore their continued abuse.
"These people being detained are being denied basic human rights," he went on. "I was at the California City detention center. I saw someone with blood in his urine that was denied medical care. I saw rocks in the food. I saw people shivering because they didn't have clothes. We need to abolish ICE and replace it. We need to stop funding ICE that's violating human rights."
During the last five days of June, ICE arrested about 10,000. ICE, which had started off the Trump presidency with a undertake the mass deportations promise by starting with what Border Czar Tom Homan called "the worst of the worst," illegal immigrant criminals, has moved on to arresting those who are illegally in the United States.
DHS released a statement, saying "Since Day One, DHS law enforcement has been delivering on President Trump's promise to the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists. Our message is clear: if you come to our country illegally, we will find you, we will arrest you, and we will deport you."
Earlier in June, Homan vowed to surge ICE agents to New York City following Governor Kathy Hochul's promise to protect illegal immigrants from being deported. "You are going to see more ICE agents than you have ever seen in New York City. And it’s coming. I just reviewed an operational plan. I’m not going to tell you exactly when it’s going to happen, but it’s coming," he said.
Those who are detained and do have a criminal record are permitted to leave and go back to their home countries. If they seek to remain in the US, they can pursue their case through the immigration courts but will not be permitted to remain at large as they do so.
