This "follows a request made by the DC Mayor to designate this event a National Special Security Event."
According to a press release from the USSS, "The 2025 Counting and Certification of Electoral Votes in Washington, DC on Jan. 6, 2025, has been designated a National Special Security Event by the Secretary of Homeland Security." USSS is an agency in the purview of DHS.
"This marks the first time a National Special Security Event designation has been granted for a Certification of Electoral Votes and follows a request made by the DC Mayor to designate this event a National Special Security Event," the release added about DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. "Various reports including from the House Select January 6 Committee and the Government Accountability Office also called for the DHS Secretary to consider a National Special Security Event designation for future Certification of Electoral Votes."
The announcement from USSS comes as the agency has faced increased scrutiny over its security failures during the Butler, Pennsylvania Trump rally in July that led to an assassination attempt on Trump's life. USSS headquarters reportedly told USSS agents connected to Trump's team not to request more security in different instances. Some have suggested that this shows a bias against Trump from the agency in the lead-up to the assassination attempt.
After the assassination attempt took place, USSS head Kimberly Cheatle resigned following a disastrous hearing for her leadership over the agency. Several USSS agents were placed on leave as well.
In addition to the designation of January 6, 2025, as a National Special Security Event, January 20, the day of the presidential inauguration, has also been designated as such by USSS.
