US citizens who wish to return to the US have been urged to do so immediately by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as commercial and even government-chartered flights will likely stop during the COVID-19 outbreak according to the Independent.
On Tuesday, Secretary Pompeo said, “We don’t know how long commercial flights will ... operate,” in addition, Pompeo said there is some uncertainty regarding the availability of government-chartered flights to return Americans home, due to fears surrounding coronavirus.
President Trump's top diplomat is urging U.S. citizens abroad to contact their closest American embassy in order to make plans “immediately” to book a flight back to America.
When Pompeo was asked whether or not he believes the Chinese government's statistics on the number of coronavirus related deaths in their country, the Secretary declined to comment. Such assessments would be better left to US government experts who are already closely evaluating and monitoring the data that is being provided by Chinese officials, he said.
After being asked about the situation in Afghanistan regarding a peace pact that the Trump administration recently made with Taliban officials, Pompeo said that based on recent meetings the administration has had with leaders in Doha, Qatar, he expects that Taliban officials will live up to the terms they have agreed upon.
